What is XMPP / Jabber?

XMPP, originally called Jabber, is an open messaging protocol that has been around since 1999. The IETF maintains it under RFC 6120 and RFC 6121. It works much like email: your account here can send and receive messages from users on any other XMPP server in the world, with no central company owning or controlling the network.
