SSD for the Jabber server

Nikolaus Polak's picture

Today we will replace one harddisk with a SSD on the Jabber server, following by a big OS upgrade.
We will try to keep the downtimes low, currently planned are following times when the Jabber service isn't reachable:
11:00-12:30 CEST
14:00-15:00 CEST
see below...
We hope that we'll have this completely finished at about 16:00 CEST (including ICQ/MSN/...-transports which have lower priority).
If anything takes more or less time we'll update this article and/or the status-page.
UPDATE 11:50 CEST: We stopped the server at 11:05 CEST, due the backups taking much longer than planned we will try to do all at once to be sure we finish in time.
UPDATE 14:10 CEST: Currently upgrading the OS of the server, then we can restore the services. GRUB2 also didn't like us, but this problem is fixed now. Perhaps we're back online at about 15:30 CEST, but latest at 16:00 CEST as promised.
UPDATE 15:30 CEST: The OpenVZ to LXC conversion scripts don't like our virtual machines, now doing a manual restore. Could take more time than planned Sad
UPDATE 16:00 CEST: Still not ready. We hope that we'll finish until 17:00 CEST now.
UPDATE 16:35 CEST: Proxmox VE 4.x doesn't support Gentoo as guest, so we have to edit more things that everything gets up again. We're surely back online between 17 and 19:00 CEST. Thanks for the patience Smile
UPDATE 17:53 CEST: We're back online Smile Transports in a few minutes, too.

We'll update this post when we've news for you.

Thanks, running fine right now, only thing we've overseen is the looooong backup time on the old harddisk, still waiting for the last one to finish (1.5G of 5.5G done...) Smile
Feels almost like the drive is dying because it's noticing it's last day Biggrin

yes, we know, just copying everything on the new SSD from the old harddrive. As you can write I hope you can read too, there in the article it says we're trying to do all upgrades until 16:00 CEST (hopefully/possible we're at about 14:00 CEST ready, but not if stupid people are holding us back by writing useless comments Wink

why 5.5G? jabber server saves all message history?

Nikolaus Polak's picture

No, surely not, no message history or archive or whatever.
But as the Jabber service is run in a dedicated virtual machine, it needs a kernel, a operating system, and thats Gentoo Linux (the hardware node/server for that runs Proxmox VE, currently upgrading from 3.x to 4.x). With the whole portage-tree (which we need for updates) the OS has about 5.5G.
As the transports are on another, seperated VM they also need about 5GB.
And the other services on the same server are again seperated.
Security first here Smile

By the way, you can see the Gentoo ebuild which we use to build our ejabberd on https://git.linuxlovers.at/nik/gentoo-overlay - we're transparent too Smile
